    Description

    Art Nouveau Craftsman glazed vase with engraved silver overlay. Made by Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati in 1895.
    Amphora with ovoid body and silver bracket handles mounted to shoulder. Neck and foot have silver collars with irregular rims. On one side are red wildflowers with crisscrossing stems on shaded green-yellow ground. On other side is scroll and flower overlay and cartouche engraved with interlaced script monogram. Dense and exuberant ornament that contrasts with the ethereal stillness of the flowers. The artist was Edward Abel (1968-1937) who worked at Rookwood from 1890-5. Fully marked included dated Rookwood stamp, artist's mark, shape no. 77, size A, and glaze letter W. Silver marked Gorham and numbered R1009.
