Mexico 1887 Zs Z 50 Centavos "Balance Scale" series. Half Dollar size silver coin from the Zacatecas Mint.
Very Fine (VF) condition with excellent details. Good strike with
visible snake, feathers & "Liberted" on cap.
Rare coin with a mintage of only 63,000 pieces. Additionally, it was the last year issue for the Zacatecas mint.
The short-lived "Balance Scale" series of Mexican coins was introduced after Maximilian's rule during decimalization.
Pesos from this series were only produced between 1869 & 1873 across nine of Mexico's regional mints.
Unfortunately, Asian merchants were unfamiliar and wary of this new design, prompting universal dislike for the coin.
Unable to engage in international trade with their new Peso, Mexico quickly returned to the classic 8 Reales design.
Although regarded as an international failure, the "Balance Scale" design remained in production until 1892, but strictly on Mexico's 25 & 50 Centavos coinage, which only circulated domestically.
