    Description

KM 384, one year type, issued while Maximilian was Emperor of Mexico. Quarter dollar size copper coin, with a crowned eagle and snake on the obverse.
Mexico had announced a suspension of payments on its debts, so forces of Great Britain, Spain and (primarily) France invaded Mexico during the winter of 1861.  The USA could only protest, since it was in the midst of the U. S. Civil War.  Great Britain and Spain negotiated settlements with Mexico, and removed their forces within a year.  France expanded its control and asked Maximilian (a younger brother of the Austrian emperor) to become the Emperor of Mexico, which he did in April 1864.  With the end of the Civil War a year later, the USA had the largest standing armed force in the world, and enforced the Monroe Doctrine and ordered the French out of Mexico.  The French withdrew in 1866.  Maximilian was captured and executed in 1867.
