INFO.THAT CAME WITH ITEM WHEN ADDED TO OUR MUSEUM:
“
This is a rare item. For years we diggers, jokingly, described these as "dog collar" buckles. We found them in Confederate camps, but they were not pretty and not having the magic letters "CS" on them. Even then we knew they were Confederate belt buckles, and it turned out that they were. Finally, someone came out with a reference book that proved that they were what we thought, authentic Confederate Civil War Buckles. Dr. Lon W. Keim, published CONFEDERATE GENERAL SERVICE ACCOUTEREMENT PLATES in 1987. This now out of print, VERY hard to find book, describes these buckles in great depth. Most with pictures that have the buckles showing on Confederate soldiers wearing them. Killer book if you do not have it. This buckle was dug in the Confederate surrender camps just outside of Greensboro North Carolina, where half of the Confederate Army surrendered, just after Lee did at Appomattox VA. I know the digger. It was dug in 1999 and never before today offered for sale. You would not believe what we found in that camp. Recent AMERICAN DIGGER magazine had an article about this camp, Vol. II, Issue 2 March-April 2015, page 50. It is brass with the iron tong missing. Is measures approx. 2 1/8 inches (55mm) long and approx. 1 7/8 (48mm) inches wide. A similar example of this buckle is published in Dr. Keim's book, page 324, item 537, as shown in the photos. These are authentic Confederate General Service belt buckles used by more Confederates than are really known. Just ask the diggers. We find them in all camps. Finally, Dr. Keim documented them.

At age 70 the grand kids have told me that they have no interest in any of the collections in the family’s traveling museum-- MOCAPA. A bit disappointing to hear but well understood in the 21st century. Plus, for me, collecting lacks the attraction that it had in years past as well as the steward collectors. Thanks, joe
